What is Sequin?

A small piece of shiny ornamental disc made from plastic or colored metal foil, often sewn on cloth or used to decorate high end apparel like bridals and evening wear to enhance value and show. Sequins are also used in curtains, upholstery, home furnishings, cushions, pillow cases, bedspreads, table covers etc. Commonly they are used with printing and embroidery mix and match to give a more expensive look. They may also be referred to as spangles, palettes, or diamonds.

Application

Sequins may be stitched flat to the fabric, so that they do not move, and are less likely to fall off; or they may be stitched at only one point, so that they dangle and move easily, to catch more light. Some sequins are made with facets, to increase their reflective ability.

What are the Sequin Sizes?
Sizes Sequins are placed into the appropriate categories based on their average size and shapes. Some common sizes are:
·         Mini are under 4mm,
·         Small are 4-7mm,
·         Medium are 8-9mm,
·         Large are 10-12 mm and
·         Extra large 12mm and up.

Wash and Care

Not all sequins or beads are washable or colorfast. Sequins and Beads are washable but while washing the garments must be turned inside out and gentle soap solution must be used. Do not iron or steam the sequins or beads as this can cause the sequins to warp or get cup shaped sequins go flat change the color or can cause the beads or sequin’s facet to warp. Never use a Dryer to dry the sequins or beds.

The History of Sequins Fabrics

When we think of sequins, the first thing that comes to mind is usually New Year’s Eve—a holiday when people venture out in their most shimmery separates to celebrate the coming year amid even shinier decorations. Sometimes, this can verge on overkill, but as we’ve shown before, there’s a way to wear sequins that won’t render you a cliché. What we  don’t  think about when we think of sequins is their history—as in, where on Earth did these shiny little guys sprinkled throughout our wardrobes come from? Was Michael Jackson—a major arbiter of the style—responsible? Or, perhaps, a ’70s/’80s-era designer? Not even close, actually! We dug around for the answer, and what we found was entirely unexpected: Sequins can be traced all the way back to the one and only King Tut, who was alive from 1341 to 1323 B.C. Some Work With Sequins

I have been hopelessly mesmerized by pretty much anything that sparkles for a long time. I have so many special memories as a young girl trying on ballgowns during shopping trips with my mom and grandmother; I was the ten year-old dragging all the evening wear into our fitting room just to play dress up. I also did the same thing with my Grammy’s vintage clothes. And I’ve always enjoyed the parade of sequin gowns on any given red carpet, if only for the inspiration and the glamour. What it boils down to for me is injecting a little something special into my closet. It’s fun to have a small slice of special event elegance in my everyday wardrobe.  Over the years I’ve probably sewn over 100 sequin garments, most of which are skirts and dresses, but I’ve also made accessories and tops, and now, jogger pants and a jumpsuit.
